Deirdre Newell is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #108216) currently providing psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and families in California. Since 2007, Deirdre has worked in a variety of therapeutic settings both nationally and internationally, including adventure therapy, adolescent residential foster care, residential trauma treatment, women’s treatment, and private practice.
Deirdre earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University at Buffalo with a double major in Anthropology and Latino Studies. She spent her initial post-undergrad years in the field of archaeology. While she loved the freedom of working in nature, she missed working closely with people. With this, she transitioned to the field of nature-based therapy, where she combined her love of nature and her joy of working in service.
She worked for several years in the backcountry of Utah with adolescents and young adults. Deirdre’s early years in the field unveiled a deep curiosity into the healing capacity of nature, as well as the individual’s potential to grow and heal when empowered to do so. Inspired by her clients’ abilities to reflect and deepen their sense of self, all without the typical luxuries of electricity, formal shelter, or running water, Deirdre pursued her career in psychotherapy wholeheartedly; She continued on to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis on Depth Psychology, from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California.
Deirdre has extensive experience supporting individuals and families in a diverse array of clinical settings, working with adults navigating life transitions, emotional challenges, personal growth, and trauma. Known for her deep insight, empathic approach, and refined professionalism, Deirdre excels in helping clients achieve greater self-awareness and emotional resilience. Her approach blends cognitive behavioral therapy, mindfulness, depth psychotherapy, and psychodynamic techniques to address issues such as stress, anxiety, relationship struggles, and career transitions.
With a reputation for balancing professionalism and humor, Deirdre’s style allows her clients to explore deep emotional work while feeling engaged and supported. She has worked extensively with executives, entrepreneurs, and professionals, understanding the unique pressures they face. Her goal is to help clients not only overcome obstacles but also thrive with greater self awareness, emotional resilience, and personal fulfillment. Her grounded yet empathic style has made her a trusted figure for those seeking meaningful change.
In addition to working in private practice, Deirdre currently serves as the Director of Counseling at an independent school in Pebble Beach, California.
