Deirdre Newell is a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT #108216) currently providing psychotherapy to adolescents, adults, and families in Carmel, California. Since 2007, Deirdre has worked in a variety of therapeutic settings both nationally and internationally, including wilderness therapy, adolescent residential foster care, residential trauma treatment, women’s treatment, adventure therapy, school counseling, and private practice.

Deirdre earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University at Buffalo with a double major in Anthropology and Latino Studies. She spent her initial post-undergrad years in the field of archaeology. While she loved the freedom of working in nature, she missed working closely with people. With this, she transitioned to the field of wilderness therapy, where she combined her love of nature and her joy of working in service.

She worked for several years in the backcountry of Utah with adolescents and young adults and experienced her own unforeseen journey of personal growth and healing. Deirdre’s early years in wilderness therapy unveiled a deep curiosity into the healing capacity of nature, as well as the individual’s potential to grow and heal when empowered to do so. Inspired by her clients’ abilities to reflect and deepen their sense of self, all without the typical luxuries of electricity, formal shelter, or running water, Deirdre pursued her career in psychotherapy wholeheartedly; She continued on to earn a Masters Degree in Counseling Psychology, with an emphasis on Depth Psychology, from Pacifica Graduate Institute in Santa Barbara, California.

In addition to working in private practice, Deirdre currently serves as the Director of Counseling at an independent school in Pebble Beach, California.
